Diane Arbus in Wales

National Museum Cardiff will host a major exhibition of Diane Arbus's work
Exhibition Preview: Diane Arbus, National Museum Cardiff, Cardiff, May 9 – August 31 2009
The work of cult photographer Diane Arbus will go on display at National Museum Cardiff in May as part of the national Artist Rooms Tour.
Featuring 69 black and white photographs which are widely considered to include some of the finest works of the cataloguer of the fringes of society, the display will be one of the first exhibitions to be shown in the Art Fund-supported venture.
"The name Diane Arbus might not be familiar to everyone, but her portraits will be," pointed out Nicholas Thornton, Head of Modern & Contemporary Art at National Museum Wales.
"As Arbus's pioneering approach to the art has greatly influenced photographers across the world, we hope this exceptional exhibition of her work will have a positive impact on new and existing visitors to the Museum."
The New York photojournalist was best known for her voyeuristic portraits in the 1960s, including Identical Twins, the spooky picture of two young girls in matching outfits which inspired Stanley Kubrick to mimic the scene to horrific effect in The Shining.
Arbus achieved notoriety before committing suicide in 1971, and was the subject of a film starring Nicole Kidman in 2006.
